Srivats TS, the marketing VP at Swiggy said this when we asked him for the top 10 things people order for the summer. “It’s scorching hot across most of the country this summer. Thankfully, restaurants on Swiggy are offering a huge array of cooling dishes to our customers to beat the heat, from light and fresh items like buttermilk and fruit juices, to indulgent desserts.”
His personal favourite this summer? “It’s a lassi.”
Here are the top 10 things ordered on Swiggy
1. Curd Rice
No wonder this is numero uno for the summer. Curd rice daily and especially during summers, keeps digestion and intestinal problems at bay. According to ayurvedic experts, curd absorbs water from intestines so it’s ideal for cases of diarrhea rampant during the mad heat.
2. Death By Chocolate
It’s a marketing phrase now but originated as a signature dish at Bennigan's restaurants in the US. The restaurant's version of the dessert had two types of ice cream, Twix candy bars dipped in chocolate sauce and served with a crumbed chocolate cookie crust. Oh also, there was another side dish of heated chocolate topping. See? it's literally Death by chocolate.
3. Sweet Lassi
It’s sweet and yoghurt-y. Summer is when the virtues of a sweet lassi is truly enjoyed. We don’t know how true this is, but we hear that in North India, demand for lassi is so high that lassi wallahs use washing machines and not regular mixers to churn curds to make lassi (never seen it happen yet).
4. Gulab Jamun
We’d rather suffer a sugar attack than a heat stroke. “In a version of gulab jamun published on AllRecipes.com, one ball has 142 calories; 8 g fat; 10 mg cholesterol; 40 mg sodium; 16.5 g carbohydrate; no fiber and 2 g protein”
We know these are popular in India. But they are also big in Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname and Jamaica (Surprise!).
5. Lassi
Lassi is supposedly an ancient drink from Punjab and a post-meal digestion aide. Lassis are rich in protein, so it’s not just summer cooler, it can also help build muscle mass hence will be extra popular with the gym-manics and bodybuilders.
6. Cold Coffee
Iced doses of caffeine is a bit of a food industry revenue phenomenon. One day it just became very cool to sip on these. Reuters reported from the US in 2015, “Peet's Coffee & Tea, one of the nation's biggest coffee chains with about 400 stores, replaced traditional iced coffee with cold brew in June, and has seen cold brew sales exceed last year's iced coffee sales by as much as 70 percent…”
7. Cold Drinks
It’s probably one of the unhealthiest things to have for an entire season of summer, but goodness does it feel good. A calorie counter says, “A glass of Coca cola or other cola drinks has as many as 97.5 calories whereas, orange flavored carbonated drinks like Fanta have around 130 calories. Lemonade and Limca on the other hand has 110 calories.”
Translation – lots of unhealthy, empty calories
8. Boondi Raita
Another high calorie yummy dish Swiggy users seem to be going all in on. We can always go for a cucumber raita over boondi or palak raita whenever we feel guilty about putting on too much weight. Till then let’s enjoy this heavenly version of raita to our heart’s content.
9. Brownie Fudge Sundae
The typical brownie fudge sundae will have 871 calories; 8g of protein; 112g of carbohydrates; 43.5g of fat and 3g of fibre.
Then again when someone puts a sundae sensation with strawberries and hot fudge topped with gooey vanilla ice cream sitting on top of crunchy waffles and the best brownies you will ever have, gosh, no one is going to think about how sinful this delight is.
10. Buttermilk
Buttermilk is typically the liquid left behind after churning butter out of cream.
Benefits of buttermilk includes lowered blood pressure, and being rich source of vitamin B complex, proteins and potassium. Vitamin B, especially riboflavin, is essential for the conversion of food to energy, secretion of hormones and digestion.
