Ltd which owns Travelyaari. Organising the unorganised bus industry, Travelyaari, through its end to end solution has built India’s largest online bus-ticket bookings platform. He spearheads the crucial responsibility of understanding the need of different stakeholders (travellers, bus service providers, agents and channel partners) and building solutions to streamline the entire industry.
Aurvind graduated as a Bachelor of Technology (Information Technology) from the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad, in 2003, and worked as a Software Engineer with the IT giant Infosys for nearly two years. He then completed his MBA in Business Administration and Management from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, interning at Deutsche Post World Net, Germany, as an IT consultant during his time there. He later joined Honeywell as a Senior Consultant before co-founding Mantis Technologies Pvt. Ltd, the parent company to Travelyaari, in November 2008.
He was not only pivotal in getting the first 50 bus service providers onto the Travelyaari platform, but also scaling it to over 2000 transporters connecting more than 17,000 destinations and facilitating bus ticketing transactions on 6000 high-traffic outlets. He believes the future is mobile, artificial intelligence and collaboration.
Aurvind’s in-depth professional knowledge has also led to the company’s exceptional growth as a market leader. Under his able leadership, not only has Travelyaari facilitated sales worth $52.61 million in the last fiscal and is targeting sales of $90.18 million in the current fiscal, but also powers 55% of the online transactions in the intercity private bus travel, an industry which is estimated to be worth $500 million dollars at present. What were the challenges while setting up the company?From the very beginning I was keen on entrepreneurship and wanted to create a self-sustaining business environment. My confidence and self-belief helped me to become an entrepreneur. The minor ups and downs during the initial stages of Traveyaari’s inception and my ability to deal with all of them without losing my momentum and bigger vision made me realise that this was always meant to be.
What is the Monetization model of Travelyaari?Travelyaari has created tremendous value for all stakeholders in the bus industry.Travelyaari charges on SAAS model for providing technology solutions to more than 2000 bus service providers / transporters. Travelyaari also generates commissionable revenue by selling bus tickets directly to the end customers and also through its channel partners and agents.
What led to the inception of Travelyaari?I was overcharged by a travel agent in Koramangala on a bus journey. Knowing that the agent was trying to take me for a ride, I decided to explore for more bus options and went to Majestic. This incident, which took place during my days at IIM-Ahmedabad, gave me the idea to build an online reservation service which will make booking a bus ticket more transparent and convenient for travellers.
Moreover, as an avid traveller, travelling to off-beat locations in remote parts of the country, I gauged the reach and the potential of the Indian bus travel industry. Travelyaari was therefore established to create a deep-rooted supply chain model for the bus ticket industry that would penetrate as many big and small cities as possible and help people all over India to book affordable bus tickets without any hassle.
