What’s Up with Online News Sites in India?

One his biggest achievements has been to get Donald Trump to apologize (wow.) Saurabh Shukla is editor-in-chief and cofounder at News Mobile, one of the first youth oriented news apps.

“We started up 3 years ago and we’ve had tremendous growth. As a journalist I believe that creating good, quality journalism can be rewarding as well. We have been bootstrapped and I am very happy that in the last 3 years we have had tremendous growth. One of our big achievements was an exclusive Donald Trump interview; we did not let him go until we asked him to apologize for his ‘locker room joke’ controversy.”

Rohit Gandhi is an award winning veteran war journalist with Emmy nominations for his documentary films. He is also editor-in-chief of Democracy Live. Dig a little and Rajat says we will find tons of tech innovation in media as well.

“There’s an app called My Story from Zee Digital Convergence (part of Zee Media Corporation). My Story used digital forensics to a certain level. The new app I am building takes digital forensics to another level. Let’s say somebody has taken a photo, I’ll be able to see what they were doing with the phone when they took that photo. That’s an area we all need to work towards but of course, the old traditional method of double, triple sourcing your information will never go out.”

The digital media wave has been rising for 5 to 7 years and Rohan Tyagi has been riding it since his digital media marketing work first with ABP News and now with Zee media.

Rohan heads digital product and marketing at Zee Media Corporation.

“Even though these are both traditional TV media companies, the digital media section is run like a startup. As the person taking care of product and marketing I have been taking care of everything from new products to clients to new sales. It has been a short and exciting startup journey."

Jio shook broadcast companies, telecommunication operators and a slew of policymakers when it decided to make a splash with a free internet bonanza. Most didn’t like it, but Rohan sees Jio only in a positive light.

“I feel that Jio is going to benefit all content creators in India, old media companies and the startup media companies. It will only promote visual story telling formats like video and GIF in a big way with improved bandwidth and connectivity.”

Only one catch though.

“The challenge will be that rich media content like videos, infographics and GIFs is far more costly than creating just plain text content. Digital age media companies will need to find a way around this, since visual story telling will increase in demand with the introduction of Jio into the Indian markets.”
