Bihar's Semiconductor Pioneer Calls Startup Journey A 'Worst Decision' Amid Infrastructure Woes

Chandan Raj of Suresh Chips shares his struggles in the state's challenging business landscape, but a glimmer of hope emerges with new road construction approval

Chandan Raj, the founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Suresh Chips and Semiconductor, Bihar's first semiconductor company, expressed his frustration in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that starting the business in Bihar was the "worst decision" of his life. He termed the state as "the land of frustration," highlighting several challenges he has faced as a semiconductor and VLSI company in the region so far.

Raj graduated in 2009 with a degree in Electronics & Telecommunication from Biju Patnaik University of Technology in Odisha. He has a diverse background, having worked with major tech firms like Samsung, Intel, Nokia Bell Labs and AMD. He established his company in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, in December 2020.

Raj detailed the issues that have derailed his venture, including losing clients due to inadequate infrastructure, in his post on X. He said that he had been waiting for improvements in roads and infrastructure for four years, without any assistance. He also mentioned feeling unsafe, stating that local police were not helpful when he was threatened by gangsters.

An X user told him to detail his concerns with authorities to address. Raj replied that he had already submitted numerous official requests and visited various bureaucratic offices, but felt it was futile to discuss Bihar's challenges, asserting that "nothing will change here."

However, the official X account of Muzaffarpur's District Magistrate responded to his concerns, that administrative approval for road construction had been granted and work would be done soon after Dussehra.
