Ola Insights On ‘How India Commuted In 2016’

Ola, one of India’s leading mobile app for transportation, has created a report on ‘how India commuted’, during the year gone by, through findings across categories on the usage of the app. The analysis takes into account several parameters including traffic congestion in cities based on average speeds, traffic bottlenecks in cities, most popular pickup/drop locations and fuel and carbon emissions saved through the usage of shared rides.

According to the report, taking into consideration India’s busiest metros – Bangalore, Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai; it was found that urban India travels at an average speed of 22.7 km/hr. Further, taking lowest speeds recorded and highest time spent, Ola has identified traffic bottlenecks in various cities. These bottlenecks indicate busiest routes and junctions across cities where, due to their location as central commercial areas, traffic is high and chaotic. These areas include Silk Board Junction in Bangalore, ITO crossing in Delhi and Kalanagar Junction in Mumbai, all prime locations for daily commuters.

Depending on the number of bookings made from or to particular locations, Ola has curated a list of prime pick-up and drop locations across cities. In Bangalore, these included Electronic City, Indiranagar, Cox Town and Koramangala; while in Delhi, they were the airport, Connaught Place and Asola. In Hyderabad, these included Charminar, HiTech City and Dilsuknagar. In each of these cities, these areas are a mixture of commercial, IT and residential hubs where frequent commute becomes necessary.

Additionally, Ola Share rides have saved 4 million+ litres of fuel in 2016, effectively keeping 6.5 million+ kgs of CO2 emissions out of our atmosphere.

Founded in Jan 2011 by IIT Bombay alumni Bhavish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati, Ola (formerly Olacabs), is one of India’s most popular mobile app for personal transportation. Ola integrates city transportation for customers and driver partners onto a mobile technology platform. Using the Ola mobile app, users across 102 cities can book from over 500,000 vehicles across cabs, auto-rickshaws and taxis. Ola has also introduced a range of shared mobility services on its platform like Ola Shuttle and Ola Share for commute and ride-sharing respectively.
