Uber Brings Back Premium Black Service In India After 10 Years

Previously available when Uber first launched in India in 2013, Uber Black was discontinued in 2014 as the company shifted focus to more budget-friendly options

Uber has brought back its premium Uber Black ride category in India, launching the service initially in Mumbai. This high-end tier promises an enhanced travel experience with top-tier vehicles and highly-rated drivers.

Uber Black offers riders access to a selection of new, high-end cars including brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. The service features amenities such as in-app controls for cabin temperature and ride preferences, professional drivers trained for superior service, and additional conveniences like luggage assistance.

The reintroduction of Uber Black comes in response to growing demand for luxury rides. Earlier this year, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi noted the high expectations of Indian customers. "Indians are so demanding and do not pay for anything," Khosrowshahi commented.

Previously available when Uber first launched in India in 2013, Uber Black was discontinued in 2014 as the company shifted focus to more budget-friendly options. The revived service now includes Uber Black Rentals, allowing users to book cars by the hour.

Interestingly, during initial testing, Uber Black rides in Mumbai were listed at lower prices compared to some base-level options. For example, a ride from South Mumbai to Bandra was priced at Rs 466.45 for Uber Black, compared to Rs 515.55 for Uber Go, although Uber Go had a shorter wait time.

Uber Black aims to cater to corporate travelers, positioning itself as “the business class of back seats.” It also offers a five-minute pickup extension before waiting fees apply, adding flexibility for riders.

The exact models eligible for Uber Black were not specified at the time of the announcement. Uber operates in 125 Indian cities and has completed over 3 billion trips since its launch in the country in 2013. The company also offers public transportation, shuttle bus bookings, and two-wheeler rides.
