Delhi Elections 2020: Voters Can Use QR Code Facility In 11 Assembly Constituencies

Get set for the Delhi elections, 2020. Don’t worry if you forgot the voters' slip, just make sure you carry your smartphone because your device is your new helpline!

Delhi elections are lined up for 8 February 2020, with over 1.46 crore voters exercising their franchise at 13,750 polling booths located at 2,689 locations across Delhi. According to the new rules, Electors can carry smartphones at polling stations in 11 out of 70 assembly constituencies for accessing QR codes from the voters' helpline app if they forget to get voters' slip to the booth. With one constituency in each of the 11 districts will have this tech-driven facility.

While explaining the process Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ranbir Singh told reporters on Tuesday, "In polling stations in these 11 constituencies, voters who have not been able to bring voters' slip but have a phone, can download the QR code from the voters' helpline app. And, that can then be used to scan before allowing them to proceed toward the polling compartment. Phones will be kept outside the compartment."

"If there is some issue in downloading the QR code or there is a network issue, then the phone would not be allowed, but would have to be deposited at a locker kept at a little before the polling compartment area", he further added.

There are a total of 1,46,92,136 voters -- 80,55,686 males, 66,35,635 females, and 815 belonging to third gender -- in the final voters' list. As compared to the final voters' list in 2019, the number of voters in Delhi has increased by 9.96 lakh in the final roll of 2020 (up to January 1).

"The number of voters in various categories includes overseas voters (489), service voters (11,556), voters in the age group 18-19 years (2,08,883) and aged above 80 years (2,05,035).The number of differently-abled voters is 55,823, and all facilities will be given to them like the 2019 Lok Sabha election", Singh said.

The officials informed the reporters that the number of vulnerable polling stations is 72, and the number of critical polling stations stands at 3,209. Postal ballot facility will be provided to 'absentee voters' -- senior citizens ages above 80 and with a disability - at their homes.
