Back in 2013, Rahul, Sachin and I had separate but related experiences among our respective families or friends where we realized that it is exceedingly difficult for young singles to find other like-minded or compatible singles online. There were matrimonial apps that were completely fixated on caste, creed and horoscope, whereas a few dating websites or apps available were creepy, crowded by men and would put off girls completely. Together we saw a huge gap in the market for an online social discovery platform that helps the new age Indian single discover each other in a safe and private manner.
India is home to a huge population of singles, who are Internet savvy and often look for a compatible date online. And yet online dating had not taken off in India primarily because of fake profiles and a highly regressive approach to matchmaking by existing apps or websites. We felt this was a space ripe for disruption, and came up with the idea of an online dating platform that would not only promise 100% verified profiles, but also suggest highly compatible matches by applying psychology and technology, instead of focusing on caste and religion.
What is your Product or Service / Offerings to Customer? TrulyMadly is India’s leading dating app with almost 3 million installs. TrulyMadly prides itself as the safest dating platform for Indian singles today. The app offers a robust profile verification system to remove fake profiles or imposters. We use a proprietary tool called Trust Score and psychometric profiling to suggest highly compatible matches to its users.
Access to TrulyMadly app is open only to singles. To register on the app, a person has to use his or her Facebook login credentials. After logging in, it asks for your basic information like your Date of birth, current city, height and relationship status. In the second step the app asks you to describe yourself in Hashtags like #Scholar, #BeachBum, and #Animallover in order to build a compatibility profile for you. In the next step, you key in your professional details. The app also gives you the option to import this data from your LinkedIn Account. After this, the app asks you about your educational background and as a final step it gives you the option to put up some pictures.
Once this process is complete, the app starts showing you profiles relevant to you. You can either like a profile or dislike it. If a profile you like also likes you back, you are able to start a conversation through the built-in messaging system.
What were the challenges while setting up this startup? Dating is still taboo in India and we're working very hard to change this!

How is your business model different from the existing ones? TrulyMadly helps singles discover each other in the easiest and safest way possible. Our app is useful for all urban independent-minded singles who are looking to find a compatible match for any kind of relationship: casual friendship, short or long-term dating or even marriage. The fact that we have 100% verified profiles and a trust score for each of them as well as the matching system which is built on compatibility differentiates us from other players.
Who are your clients? How do you look at expanding? 55% of our base comes from the top 6 urban cities and we have a strong growing base in tier 2 and 3 cities as well.
The best and worst memories while setting up I have only good memories when it comes to TrulyMadly. From the time we had our first couple match, the first mail from a couple who met through TrulyMadly, these are the things that drive us towards doing what we do.
Your Marketing Plans so that the world knows youAt TrulyMadly, we have consciously adopted “the voice of the millennial” in talking to its audience (young singles) – through various media – TV, social media, digital video, offline events and even content partnerships with the likes of Starbucks, Forever 21, Nykaa, OnePlus X, Zivame (an online lingerie retailer), etc. As a platform that promotes a new concept, it is our constant effort to reach out to our audiences in unique and interesting ways.
