The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has asked banks and payment apps to deactivate unused UPI IDs and numbers by the end of this year. This is because some customers change phone numbers without updating their bank account information, which can pose a security risk.
NPCI advises customers to regularly review and verify their information to ensure safe transactions. Additionally, NPCI guidelines include identifying inactive UPI IDs and phone numbers, re-registering blocked IDs and numbers, performing requester validation before making payments and displaying customer names during transactions. In October, there were over 1,100 crore UPI payments worth Rs 17.16 Lakh crore.
