Supertail's Varun Sadana Recognises Vital Role Of Apps, Ecommerce In Streamlining Pet Care Sector

For thousands of years, across the world, people and animals have shared a special connection. Reports suggest that ancient Egyptians revered cats for their pest control prowess as early as 5,500 BC. Meanwhile, countless cultures have valued dogs for their loyalty and companionship, with archaeological finds depicting humans and canines coexisting as far back as 12,000 years ago.

However, the concept of modern pet care, with its focus on pet wellness and specialised services, is a relatively recent development.  This shift can be traced back to the nineteenth century, coinciding with the rise of the middle class in Western societies. Increased disposable income and leisure time fueled a growing affection for pets, transitioning them from working animals to cherished family members.

India's First-time Pet Parents Drive Personalised Care

While pet parenthood has a longer history in Western countries, India offers a particularly fascinating case study. Unlike the West, India's pet population has boomed in recent years. Bolstered by trends like decreasing fertility rates and increasing need for companionship, the pet population in India stands at approximately 35 million, growing at a CAGR of over 15 per cent.  A staggering 90 per cent of pet parents in India are first-timers. This influx of new pet parents, many with limited experience,  necessitates a different approach to pet care.

Gone are the days of a one-size-fits-all approach. Today's Indian pet parent seeks guidance on everything from breed-specific nutrition to navigating their puppy's first vaccinations. This trend has spurred the rise of online pet communities, educational resources, and even pet care subscription boxes tailored to a pet's age, breed, and specific needs.  Today the pet care industry is certain to cater even more extensively to this growing desire for individualised care.

The pandemic also accelerated pre-existing trends in the pet care industry, such as the demand for premium and natural pet foods, personalised grooming services, and luxury accessories. Pet parents became increasingly discerning about the products they purchased for their furry companions, seeking out items that align with their values and lifestyle choices. This shift towards customization has fueled innovation and growth within the pet care market, with companies vying to capture a share of the lucrative pet industry pie.

Technology's Role in Pet Care

Perhaps one of the most significant drivers of change in the pet care industry has been the integration of technology into every aspect of pet parenthood. From smart pet feeders and activity trackers to telemedicine and personalised nutrition plans, technology has revolutionised the way we care for our pets.

One notable area where technology has made a profound impact is in pet health and wellness. Advances in veterinary medicine, such as diagnostic imaging, minimally invasive surgeries, and regenerative therapies, have improved outcomes for pets facing various health challenges. Moreover, the proliferation of online vet consultations has made it easier for pet parents to access veterinary care remotely. Most times, unusual behaviours in our pets don't warrant a physical health visit. In such cases, these services act as lifesavers, allowing us to navigate parenthood with peace of mind.

On the consumer side, ecommerce platforms and mobile apps have streamlined the purchasing process, allowing pet parents to order supplies, schedule appointments and access personalised recommendations with just a few taps on their smartphones. Social media platforms have also played a vital role in connecting pet parents, fostering communities, and driving trends in pet care and lifestyle.

Looking ahead, the pet care industry is poised for further growth and innovation as technology continues to advance and consumer preferences evolve. From AI-powered pet care assistants to pet fitness trackers, the possibilities are endless. However, amidst all the technological advancements and market trends, one thing remains constant – our unwavering love and devotion to our furry companions. After all, let's not forget the simple, heartwarming truth: the happiness of our pets is intertwined with our own.
