Tracing back to the time when accounting was maintained manually through pen and paper, Indian businesses have undergone drastic changes ever since. As one spins the evolution wheel, Tally stands out as the pioneer in the business software arena. By providing flexibility, it allows businesses to remain disorganized if they wish yet increasing their efficiency.
Tally Solutions, then known as Peutronics, was co-founded by late Shri Shyam Sunder Goenka and his son Bharat Goenka in the year 1986. Back then the father-son duo, together, were running a small manufacturing unit and moved out of Kolkata to set up their textile serving business in Bangalore. Shri S.S Goenka wanted to automate his business operations in accounting which could be used in their own factory as well. Due to son’s interest in programming, they decided to invest in an accounting software. He sat through three or four demos which would last only a quarter or half an hour with him blankly staring at the screen, unable to understand anything. The very first demo merely lasted for a couple of minutes with a justification from the son that computer understands codes and not English. The response that came from the father,
“When I buy a car, I want to be a driver and not a mechanic.
I want to run my business, not run your computer.”His response is easily the backbone of where the company is today. The vision to simplify accounting operations led to the birth of Tally.
Thousands of people have realised their dream of becoming an entrepreneur. However, Indian SMEs are usually seen adopting a non-DIY nature and deviating from the focus of product mentality. But Tally appears to have successfully ticked all the boxes of a product design checklist. Impacting almost every business across the country and more than one million customers across the globe, the company has not just delivered a box of software but happiness.
At a time when it had barely three thousand customers, late Shri S.S Goenka told his son,
“There are only two kinds of businesses:
Those who use tally, and
Those who will use Tally.”An insight that changes the entire outlook of what problem Tally has been trying to solve:
“Are you writing program to make life of the Programmer easier, or life of the User easier?”
This lays down the foundation on which Tally was born and continues to build on. Being a technology company, it sells products that lead to solving of database stability in hostile power environments. Good software needs to adapt to the way its user works and not the other way round: a benchmark of simplicity that the company has set.
For Tally, success is the fact that the brand has become synonymous with accounting. Trusted by over eleven lakh SMBs, Tally is proudly a leading player in the Indian market of business management software. It has extended its roots across the borders in over a hundred countries.
Over the decades, Tally has been building all its technology in house. This eludes the drawback of restrictions certain software have. All the needed skill and knowhow remains within the purview of the company. This facilitates the use of all that skill at the doorstep and allows breathing new life into the company. By complying with the latest technology at any given point of time, the products have witnessed several remarkable transformations. The most recent launch made by the company this year is ‘Tally.ERP 9 Release 5’; a powerful tax management software over and above the existing ERP.
In the new regime of Goods and Services Tax (GST) to be rolled out later this year, Tally has tied up with CAIT and ASSOCHAM in order to educate and prepare businesses across India for GST. It is also now a qualified GST Suvidha Provider (GSP). In the year gone by, the company launched ‘Tally for GST’, a mobile application for businesses to become aware of GST. This free application can be downloaded by Android and iOS users from their respective App Stores. Moreover, the company has also launched an exclusive blog which provides the most updated information on GST and its related impact on verticals.
Today, three decades since its inception, Tally delivers phenomenal innovation and excellence in enterprise resource planning (ERP) software along with unmatched customer experience. Its products cater to millions of users across the globe. The company aims, ‘To be the technology fabric that drives the economic growth of the world, by 2030.’
