The TiE Powerhouse

Mr. Rao was hovering near a charging socket. His phone was exhausted early on in the day by all the calls he had been making. “Do you even need to come to conferences like these?”

I became an entrepreneur because of TiE, he said. I met my first client a few years ago at a TiE event at this very same hotel, coincidentally, right there. He pointed to a spot a couple of feet away.

And there would be an unending stream of individuals inspired by what The Indus Entrepreneurs (the long version of TiE) have done to strike out on their own as entrepreneurs.

TiE was founded in 1992 in Silicon Valley by a group of successful entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and senior professionals hailing from the Indus region. At present TiE Global has 13,000 members with more than 2,500 charter members in 61 chapters across 18 countries. Their mission is to nurture entrepreneurship through the pillars of mentoring, networking, education, incubating, and funding.

The Global Summit 2016

This year’s TiE Global Summit held in the NCR, was organized in partnership with state agencies of the Government of India, TiE chapters pan India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and Dubai, and multi national venture capital funds. It’s one of the largest such conferences for entrepreneurs anywhere in the world.

Also present were leading investors from US, Japan to India, like New Enterprise Associates (NEA for short. Their total assets under management are around 18 billion dollars); Soft Bank; Sequoia Capital; Kalaari Capital, and Indian Angel Network who met with pre-selected startups of their choice.

While you may not snag your next round of funding or as many clients as you would like, it’s largely cited as one of the most effective networking sessions to make some headway in both areas.

DIPP Secretary, Ramesh Abhishek; Sushil Chandra, chairman of central board of direct taxes; UK Sinha of Small Industries Development Bank India; pioneering agents like cofounder of SanDisk, Sanjay Mehrotra, Binny Bansal of Flipkart and Sanjeev Bikhchandani, were present.

The TiE Lumis Entrepreneurial Excellence Awards and the Spirit of Manufacturing Awards recognized intelligent logistics automation platform, Locus as one of three winners. The exposure for startups through TiE often goes far into impressing investors and mentors.

TiE’s influence

It prides itself on being the “largest pool of intellectual capital anywhere, for catalysing wealth creating in the range of 200 billion dollars and for making an impact on liberalization of certain economic sectors in India and Pakistan.

You wants to see these fetes manifested physically? Then drop by a TiE gathering sometime soon.
