TikTok Crosses 2 Billion Downloads; India Accounts For Over 30%

As people across the world have been cramped to the comfort of their homes, the popularity of TikTok has skyrocketed. The short-video sharing application has crossed 2 billion downloads across The App Store and Google Play Store.

The App Store recorded 24.5 per cent (495.2 million) of the total downloads, while the Play Store contributed 75.5 per cent (1.5 billion) of the total downloads reported by the Bytedance-owned platform. Remarkably, TikTok registered over a 50 per cent surge in the number of downloads in the past two weeks. 

On 13th April, TikTok made a milestone by aggregating 1 billion downloads on Play Store alone.

According to a Sensor Tower report, India has been the biggest driver of TikTok installs, generating 611 million to date or 30.3 per cent of the total. China was ranked second, accounting 196.6 million to date or 9.7 per cent of all the downloads. At 165 million downloads, US is third in line in terms of apps installed.

So far TikTok has created $456.7 million of revenue, of which $435 million was made from the App Store (iOS) while the remaining $21.4 million was generated from the Play Store. In terms of revenue generation, China ranked top at $331 million, or 72.3 per cent of the total followed by the US and Great Britain with revenue of $86.5 million and $9 million, respectively.

India wasn’t in the list of revenue generators for the firm even though the company has started monetising in the country over the last 6-8 months. As per the latest data, the company had collected about Rs 23-25 crore of revenue in the quarter ending December 2019 from India.
