Apple’s iPhone 6s Trumps All; Samsung Needs to Pull Up its Socks

Apple’s iPhone 6s was the biggest selling mobile phone in the world in 2016, according to an analytics and solutions firm. The news comes as a shot in the arm for Apple. According to the HIS report, in the fourth quarter alone, the new iPhone 7 was the 2016 best-seller, followed by iPhone 7 Plus.

The report is based on the Smartphone Shipment Database, which tracks quarterly shipments for more than 350 smartphone models.

“Apple again has demonstrated that its new iPhones integrate enough innovations and new features to drive sales and remain successful in the market. The company is also capable of selling older devices for an extended period of time. For instance, the year-old iPhone 6s and 6s Plus were both among the most-shipped models in 2016,” says the IHS Markit report.

Surprisingly, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and S7 were ranked fifth and ninth, respectively, although sales of these two smart phones devices have outdone their predecessors, that is, S6 and S6 Edge. However, the silver lining for the company is that it claimed five spots out of the top 10 most-shipped smartphones in 2016. With Samsung recalling Note 7, S7 and S7 Edge have been left to fend but they performed impressively.

The smartphone market has witnessed a number of premium smartphones launched by other companies. The sector should see increased rivalry in the segment with new launches this year.
