Harnessing Technology For Social Good

CSR leaders discuss how technology drives social impact, enhances transparency and bridges gaps, empowering communities and nonprofits for measurable change
BW Social Impact Panel 3

Technology has emerged as a powerful tool in driving social impact, enhancing transparency, and empowering communities worldwide. At a recent panel discussion, CSR leaders shared insights on how innovative technologies are transforming the non-profit sector, bridging gaps in education, and ensuring measurable outcomes. From enabling digital literacy and implementing advanced educational tools to creating platforms for data transparency and improving reporting mechanisms, the session highlighted the multifaceted role of technology in fostering equity and driving meaningful change.

Empowering Communities Through Digital Tools

Kanika Dewan, Director, Shikhar Dhawan Foundation, highlighted the organisation’s strides in using technology for community upliftment. Within three years, the foundation has implemented smart devices, interactive panels and K-12 software, positively impacting over 1.5 lakh students. These initiatives have bridged the gap between NGO-supported and private schools, raising education standards.

The foundation also ensures transparency for donor partners through behavioural assessments and data-driven monitoring tools. This approach provides detailed impact reports, fostering trust and accountability in donor-NGO relationships.

Tech-Driven CSR Programme Design

Tanish Maheshwari, Head of Communications & Advocacy, DLF Foundation, emphasised the integration of technology in programme design and execution. Over two decades, he has leveraged mobile apps for community mobilisation and digital literacy initiatives.
Additionally, technology has enhanced transparency in partnerships and streamlined volunteer programmes.

Notably, the foundation has introduced innovative projects like the Shantivan Crematorium, which employs energy-efficient technologies to improve civic amenities. For Maheshwari, technology is an enabler, amplifying impact and ensuring connectivity with beneficiaries.

Building Trust and Transparency in the Nonprofit Sector

Pushpa Aman Singh, Founder of GuideStar India, addressed the critical need for reliable non-profit data. Her platform hosts information on over 12,000 non-profits, enabling CSR teams and donors to make informed decisions. Singh noted that while the number of companies partnering with non-profits is increasing, many organisations lack adequate infrastructure for impact tracking.

GuideStar India standardises and aggregates non-profit data, reducing redundancies and enhancing transparency. This approach helps non-profits build credibility and makes impact reporting more efficient for CSR partners.

The Role of Technology in Global Development Goals

Ratnesh Jha, Executive Director, UN Global Compact Network India, discussed the convergence of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and technological advancements. Jha reflected on the evolution of technology, from paper-based systems to digital platforms and highlighted how mobile phones, Aadhaar and UPI have revolutionised financial inclusion and impact monitoring.

However, Jha cautioned against over-reliance on technology without inclusive program design. He stressed the importance of equity and keeping beneficiaries at the centre of all initiatives to ensure technology narrows gaps rather than widens them.

A Decade of Digital Transformation

Session Chair Lavanya Jayaram, Regional Director - South Asia, AVPN, underscored the transformative impact of digital technologies over the past decade. From advancing digital literacy during the pandemic to improving access to devices, innovation has been pivotal in addressing societal challenges. AVPN continues to support social investors by guiding effective capital deployment to bridge impact gaps.
