TikTok Most Downloaded App In May

The criteria for downloads has been a little different since the lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic worldwide and the need to connect online via apps.

In April this year, Zoom had been the most downloaded non-gaming app both on Google Play as well as on App Store, with almost 131 million installs, showing a 60 times more growth than in April 2019.

The second most downloaded non-gamic app was TikTok, having around 107 million downloads in April 2020, a 2.5 times more increase in a year.

Overall the list of top 10 most downloaded apps, other than the gaming apps, in last month was dominated by online communication apps. After Zoom and TikTok, the three other most downloaded non-gamic apps, both on the App Store and Google App Store in April 2020 included Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.

Bytedance owned app, TikTok has continued to retain its dominion as the most downloaded app in the non-gaming category in May. The short video sharing platform has recorded 111.9 million downloads according to a Sensor Tower report which provides market intelligence and data that drives growth for mobile apps.

According to the reports, video conferencing app Zoom, despite the privacy and security concerns raised by the Indian government regarding the use of the app, India accounted for the most downloads of the application which was the top downloaded app in April, has slipped to the second position with 94.6 million installs. Previously, it was also reported that India represented a significant portion of Zoom’s 300 million daily meeting participants globally.

While TikTok has recorded a 4.5% surge in the number of downloads from 107 million in April to 111.9 million in May, a 2.5 folds increase. Zoom’s downloads tumbled 27.7% from 131 million in April to 94.6 million in the last month.

India remains popular for TikTok, with 20% of the total downloads, followed by the US which contributed 9.3%. Zoom received an equal contribution from India and the US with 17% share of total downloads each.

In numbers, TikTok saw 22.38 million downloads from India in May whereas Zoom registered around 16 million installs from the country. The figures for the previous month stands at 23.5 million and 23.8 million downloads respectively.

While India dominated in the most number of downloads for the top two apps in the non-gaming category, the Indian government’s Aarogya Setu application is now the seventh most downloaded application worldwide with a total of 116 million downloads for the second consecutive month. The Covid-19 contact tracing application is absent on the App Store top 10 index but holds the fifth spot on Play Store’s ranking.

For overall downloads, Aarogya Setu is followed by Google Meet, Netflix, and Microsoft Teams— a clear indication of the Covid-19 lockdown and social distancing norms that are being followed around the world to contain the spread of the coronavirus. However, these apps may not see the same growth momentum and a saturation level for them is expected in the coming months.
