In an interaction with Sujata Sangwan of BWDisrupt, Amit Munjal, Founder and CEO of Doctor Insta, shares his startup journey from inception to till now.Moments and the JourneyAlthough the company was incorporated in July 2015, the services were formally launched in early December, 2015 after robust alpha and beta testing. So far, our journey has been very rewarding and encouraging. We take great pride in being a Triple bottom-line company which places Planet and People first and Profits second. So far, we have done various strategic alliances with almost all online pharmacies and diagnostic labs so that we could provide one stop solution to Patients’ healthcare needs. We have also empaneled some of the best and brightest doctors and caregivers in the country on this beautiful journey of ours. Our journey in India has just begun and we feel that best is yet to come for us. The idea, at this point of time, is not to maximize the top line but to increase customer adoption and engagement. As most of the tech startups do, we are providing the first consultation free and have done over 10,000 consultations worth GMV of Rs 40 Lakhs.

Funding statusWe raised seed capital from a US based VC Company, BrahmaX Ventures and two angel investors based out of New Delhi and New Jersey.
Monetization modelWe have three monetization models:1. B2C - User pays a standard fee per consultation with Specialist Doctors
2. B2B2C - Employer pays a small PMPM (Per Member Per Month) fee and the employees can consult a Doctor/Caregiver at a discounted price.
3. DII (Doctor Insta Inclusion) - For the rural areas of India in collaboration with companies running e-Kiosks. User pays a standard fee of Rs. 100-150 per consultation with MBBS Doctors.
Traction detailsDoctor Insta’s app which is available for Android and iOS users, having more than 300,000 downloads and the startup is doing over 900 consultations a day.
Future plansThere are 1 Million Allopathic Doctors in India, each doing 50 consultations a day. That means 50M consultations happening in India every day. In 2 years, we want to acquire just 2% of this market i.e. 1 M consultations a day. We also want to expand our services to other developing and less developed nations in alliance with strategic partners in these countries.
Marketing plansWe promote our company through social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Viber. Through our alliance partners such as PayTm, MobiKwik and also through our strategic partners. We are also exploring various offline channels as well such as Radio Campaigns, Print ads, mall and corporate activities.
The ChallengesOne major roadblock is the adoption and engagement of telemedicine in India. Although a) PM Modi and the Indian government strongly support telemedicine and b) Independent research studies show us that 70% of the OPD cases do not require any in-person visit, yet people may feel the need of going physically to OPD. However, slowly but certainly, people are accepting and embracing Telemedicine and Doctor Insta as we are experiencing a Triple Digit Growth.
Market size & opportunityThe total addressable market in India is around $25 Billion and there is equally big market in other developing countries and smaller developed nations. The share of IT in healthcare market is small but increasing at a CAGR of high double digits to triple digits.
This growth is seen as a result of increasing Internet penetration and smartphone user base. The growth contributors are changing mindset of people, young population with average age of 27-28 and innovativeness of HealthTech Players like Doctor Insta.
