Handicraft-focused Global Marketplace Etsy Enters India

US-based marketplace for unique and creative goods, Etsy has announced its entry into the Indian market and has hired a team under Himanshu Wardhan who is Managing Director for Indian operations. The newly formed team which is based in Delhi, would support the existing Etsy’s sellers here and help more creative entrepreneurs in the region share their work with the world through its platform. They also plans to train sellers online and offline, as well as offering free listings incentives to all new sellers from the country.

Currently, the company claims to have more than 650,000 items available on Etsy from Indian sellers.

Founded in 2005 in Brooklyn, New York, Etsy’s marketplace has more than 50 million items across dozens of categories, including jewellery and accessories, clothing and shoes, home and living, art & collectibles, craft supplies and vintage items. With 35 million buyers, Etsy connects 2 million creative entrepreneurs, 87% of whom are women.

“As big businesses move into India, we believe Etsy can stand out as a destination for small business and creative entrepreneurs. We’re excited to have a small team on the ground to help grow and support our seller community, enabling them to share even more of their unique and handcrafted goods with the world,” the company mentioned in its blog post.

With its entry into the India market, the company plans to focus on creating more opportunities for India’s extensive maker community to sell their products worldwide.
