Food delivery giants Swiggy and Zomato have increased their platform fee from Rs 5 to Rs 6 per order, a 20 per cent hike, according to media reports.
Initially implemented in Bengaluru and Delhi, this fee is separate from delivery charges, GST, restaurant fees, and other associated expenses, as per media reports. The fee applies universally to all orders, regardless of customer enrollment in loyalty programs.
Swiggy first introduced a platform fee of Rs 2 in April 2023, followed by Zomato in August of the same year. Since then, both companies have incrementally raised this fee without seeing a drop in order volumes. During peak hours, Zomato has charged as much as Rs 9 per order, while Swiggy has experimented with a Rs 10 fee for specific customers in several cities.
Despite previous statements from Swiggy indicating no plans for a significant fee increase, experts suggest both companies will continue raising fees until they encounter customer resistance. Currently, these platform fees apply only to food delivery services and not to quick commerce ventures like Swiggy’s Instamart and Zomato’s Blinkit.
